Why freelancers and small businesses make the perfect match

 In Small Businesses & Startups

When it comes to mutually beneficial working practices, freelancers and small businesses are the perfect pair.

Online freelancer community People Per Hour (PPH) have just published the results of a survey that spells out why they’re so perfectly suited.

Having spoken to representatives from 1,000 SMEs, PPH described freelancers as “the real grist to the mill of British business”.

Let’s take a closer look at why freelancers and small businesses make the perfect match:

What are the benefits of hiring freelancers?

According to the PPH survey results, 67% of SMEs now use freelancers, and 27% cite them as crucial to the running of their business.

These were the primary benefits SMEs expressed about hiring freelancers:

  • Freelancers help SMEs solve localised skills deficits (55%).
  • Freelancers enable SMEs to increase capacity in a flexible way (37%).
  • Freelancers allow SMEs to cover additional work without increasing overheads (23%).
  • Freelancers help SMEs get around recruitment fees (13%).

However, the study did not cover all the benefits. Freelancers tend to have extensive skills in specific areas. This makes them perfect for certain projects as they will provide more value in terms of the end product.

And, if a small business owner fails to get the quality of work they were expecting, they can easily turn to another freelancer without having to go through the hiring process again.

According to the survey, a significant number of SMEs use four freelancers for every employee. The roles most frequently covered by freelancers are:

  • Administration
  • Web development
  • App development

So, if you haven’t thought about using freelancers in the past, now’s the time to give it a go.
